Plastic-Free Awareness Month at Melanie Richards Hair & Beauty Salon, Peterborough

July is all about making conscious choices, and Plastic-Free Awareness Month is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on how small changes in our everyday routines can have a big impact. What started as a simple challenge has now become a global movement, with millions of people across nearly 200 countries coming together to reduce their use of single-use plastics. Each year, mountains of plastic waste end up polluting our oceans and harming precious ecosystems, but with collective effort, we can turn the tide.

Plastic-Free July reminds us that every choice counts. By cutting back on single-use items, we not only help protect wildlife and natural habitats, but we also influence positive change in the way businesses and governments approach sustainability. At Melanie Richards Hair & Beauty Salon in Peterborough, we’re proud to be part of this movement and are committed to doing our bit to support a cleaner, greener planet.

We’re passionate about reducing plastic waste in every way we can. One of the ways we do this is by using Scrummi towels in the salon. These single-use hairdressing towels are a brilliant alternative to traditional cotton, completely biodegradable and designed to break down naturally within 8 to 12 weeks. It’s one of the simple swaps we’ve made that really helps us cut down on unnecessary laundry and plastic packaging.

We’re also proud to work closely with The Green Salon Collective. They help us recycle waste that would otherwise go to landfill, everything from hair clippings and used colour tubes to foils and PPE like gloves and plastic lids. All of this is collected from our salon using electric vans or carbon-neutral transport, making the process even kinder to the planet. It’s not just about what we throw away, it’s about making sure it’s handled responsibly and reused wherever possible.

Sustainability is also a big part of how we choose the brands we work with. That’s why we love using Aveda. Their vegan hair colours are not only high-performance, but they’re packaged with care too. The bottle caps are made entirely from recycled material, and the cartons come from 100% recycled fibre - 77% of which is post-consumer recycled. Aveda has a strong stance on being cruelty-free and completely vegan, which fits perfectly with the way we believe beauty should be.

We know the journey toward a plastic-free future is ongoing, but we’re committed to taking every step we can. Whether it’s cutting back on single-use plastics, using eco-friendly alternatives, or partnering with organisations that care about the environment as much as we do, we’re always looking for new ways to improve.

Thank you to our clients for supporting our efforts - it means the world to us, and to the planet.
